I'm always in the mood for shopping fun so I recently attended an open house at the store sponsored by the West Brighton LDC where I was warmly welcomed by Claire Guadagno, the bubbly owner of Hand Picked Creations. The store was full of people in a party mood, enjoying refreshments and shopping. Not only did I find this lovely mink hat but I also snagged a beaded handbag to add to my collection.

The store is nicely laid out in a large space with quite a selection of clothing. I saw everything from classic black jackets to fabulous 80's disco wear. Everyone should check out the back room; which is full of sale items! I had my eye on a pair of turquoise harem pants I found in the sale section and may just have to go back and try them on.

Comic Hero's We Admire...IN SPACE

One of things I enjoyed most as a child was reading comic books. Comics allow the reader to become fully engrossed in the world of the creator, by providing both entertaining and interesting visuals in combination with dialogue. Comics can also provide an alternate story line of other forms of entertainment. Some specific vintage comics I enjoyed growing up (and still enjoy) are Star Trek and Supergirl comics. (Oh I love the outfit!)

I started my search on Bonanza to see if they had a selection of Vintage Supergirl Adventure Comics I enjoy the Supergirl comics because of their alternative perspective on fighting crime. Yes, girls are strong, smart and have super powers - plus she looks fabulous in tights!

When I checked for Star Trek Comics on Bonanza, I stumbled upon a DC Star Trek No. 1 First Issue Vintage Comic . Star Trek comics are great because they offer any Star Trek, or 'Trekkie' a completely new story line to become familiar with. As the comic says, "The Adventure Begins Anew!"

Comicvine.com is a interesting website where you can look up any information about almost any comic! You can even search by character in a particular series, such as my favorite character, Spock from Star Trek.

History of the Pencil Skirt by Hey Viv Vintage Clothing

The pencil skirt is a perfect choices for all shapes and sizes of women, and has been so for over 100 years. It maintains femininity yet also exudes a strong power, it is sensual without revealing too much, making it perfect for day wear, to night wear, and most often- work wear. The pencil skirt can be worn and accessorized in so many ways, and allows your personal style to shine through.

The pencil skirt was first introduced into womens fashion by French designer Paul Poiret in the early 1900’s, and called the “hobble skirt” due to its narrow width at the hem and extremely constricting nature. To walk in a hobble skirt took practice and care--- there are quotes stating “The tighter the better” about the early hobble skirt, and this certainly was the mentality of that time. The hobble skirt created the romantic, whimsical dolly look of the time, and a woman able to walk gracefully in a hobble skirt was surely a sign that she had a sophisticated sensuality, with a hint of mirth.

This idea brought about accessories such as the hobble garter. The hobble garter limited a woman's stride so that she would not cause the skirt to rip. Eventually the trend faded with the invention of cars as it was difficult to climb in and out of vehicles in such tight fabric.

Much later on in the early 50s Christian Dior re introduced the pencil skirt as a part of his “New Look.” Women at that time were of a unique mindset--- they had been "holding down the fort" while the men were away fighting in WWII. Once the war was over and the boys were coming back home, they had to leave their posts and go back to playing the roll of housewife. Another contributing factor was that Americans at that time were yearning for something new after so many years of struggle --- the New Look provided a fresh revitalization of fashion and form, and it took on like wildfire.

His inspiration for the New Look pencil skirt was influenced by skirts his own mother had worn in the 1900s, no doubt a "hobble skirt."

Dior's skirt was much more functional for the modern woman, and often featured a slit in the back or a kickpleat to aid in walking without compromising too much in shape.

Stretchy fabrics such as polyester and other synthetic knits allowed women to wear the tight style but not have to "hobble" too much.

Today the pencil skirt is still worn and is a very common addition to the American woman's wardrobe. It is often paired wtih a tucked in blouse, or a cropped blazer with some flare at the waist, to further accentuate the hips. The pencil skirt can go from a very traditional look, to a wild avant garde or punk rock look, depending on what you wear.

We have a new item in the works that will be unveiled soon -- a Hey Viv pencil skirt that is great for the pencil skirt wearing lass all the way from work to the stage. Adjustible sizes and a minimal yet retro shape makes it a great choice for the vintage fashion lover, or for period piece plays like Bye Bye Birdie.

What features do you look for when you are shopping for a pencil skirt? I like the very slim styles that have a kickpleat to make walking much easier. Wide waistbands can have a neat look too, with the right shirt and belt. Vintage touches like sailor style buttons on the sides are also a nice look, without being too much. Just remember, when putting together your vintage look, most importantly have fun with it!

Hey Viv Visits Ira Kabalkin at Ira's Curiosity Shop on Van Duzer Days

Ira’s Curiosity Shop, a Staten Island staple, and treasure trove for antique hunters.

I met Ira Kabalkin first in Port Richmond when I opened my store in 1986. He was kind enough to stop by my store back then, and offer me support and advice, as well as introduce me to other dealers in the Staten Island antique and vintage scene.

He’s been in the antiques business here on Staten Island for well over 30 years. He first started out on Bay St., and now can be found on Van Duzer St, an eclectic stretch of street located just a short walk from St. George in Staten Island’s up and coming North Shore.

He finds that small collectibles always sell, and if you are looking for a unique antique gift or just a little something for yourself you will definitely find it at Ira’s. His store is a whimsical blend of Victorian furniture, eclectic collectibles, and magical flea market finds. He says about his own store: “50% is oddball and 50% is weird.” Ira is always surprised by what people want to buy or collect-- “Stuff that I think is weird, is someone else’s collectible.” Ain’t it the truth!

Ira welcomes customers and encourages them to browse. There is a lot to look at, and he lets you take your time and inspect the many fascinating items in his shop. He is known to say “If you find something you can’t live without... call me.”

Here are some pictures of my most recent visit to Ira’s. I was so happy to find that great vintage purse! I always walk away from Ira’s with something I love, for a great price.

It's that time of year again when summer camps and community theaters put on productions of "Grease", "Bye Bye Birdie" and 50's musical revues. "Summer days driftin' away, to uh-oh those summer nights"

Let's not forget Sock Hops and Classic Car Shows. Those are fun summer activities that everyone enjoys. It's fun to dress up, dance or cruise the hot rods and feel like you're back in the good old days. "Well, you can rock it you can roll it - You can slop and you can stroll it at the hop"

What's up with polka dots?

Although we often think of polka dotted clothing and accessories as being a very 50s or 20s thing, the polka dotted pattern originated as far back as the early 1800's, and possibly earlier.

Where did the name"Polka Dot" come from?

It's hard to find a clear answer, but research shows that the name Polka became associated with polka dots in a sort of happenstance way--- as dotted fabrics became popular for clothing in the 19th century, there was also a massive explosion of popularity for Polka music and dancing. (perhaps partially because the dance featured actual physical contact between the two sexes) People began referring to the dots as polka dots at that time, maybe because everyone was wearing them and doing the polka quite a bit! The use of the term "Polka dot" has been recorded as early as 1873.

People attached the term "Polka" to things that didn't have dots as well during the polka craze. Polka dots were just so popular though, that the name and style stuck, eventually becoming very popular again in the 20's, and once more in the 50s.

We might also think of the song "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini". Polka dots have earned a beachy, fun, girlish vibe over the years and are a great fabric for all sorts of swimwear and accessories. Dotted swimwear has been popular since the 1800s when ladies wore swimsuits that were more like a dress, than the extremely scantily clad beach garments of today.

Polka dots are also the perfect pattern for when you would like to wear something formal, yet still fun and fresh. This 50s style halter polka dot dress is great for a party:

My day in the spotlight! Hey Viv! Gets a photo shoot by Kimbra Eberly.

Last weekend I had a great time doing something a little bit out of the ordinary. I had won a photo shoot session with Kimbra Eberly in an auction and it was the perfect opportunity to get some new pictures done to use for online networking sites and on my vintage and retro costume site Hey Viv! Kimbra is an artist, photographer, filmmaker and producer of "The Directors Chair TV" and "The Directors Chair TV Island Arts Expo", so I knew I would be in good hands.

I must admit I was a little nervous as I got my various costumes together and made my way to the shoot. Thankfully Delia Vassar Semanchik came with me to be my assistant, makeup artist, and wardrobe manager! She did a great job.

My first impressions upon walking into Kimbra's studio were filled with big backdrops, mirrors, lots of lights, and equipment. I always find the setup of photographer studios a bit intimidating at first, especially when I'm the one getting the photoshoot! Kimbra really made me feel comfortable as she showed me around the studio. My fears of knocking one thing over and the whole building falling down in suit slowly faded away in the distance :)

Delia started off with my makeup. I felt confident and was impressed that I didn't feel overly made up, but instead enhanced. I really liked the apple pink lipstick that she picked out for me.

Then began the photo shoot --- Kimbra got me warmed up by starting out with a few pictures of me in the a black and white check skirt and peter pan blouse. The check skirt is great, especially for events the warmer months because the top layer is a light and soft poly cotton, and it's fluffed up with a built in crinoline. And when paired with the peter pan top, you are all set to have an authentic 50s look that's great for stage and special occasions. As she adjusted the lighting, Kendra gave me advice on how to pose for the outfit, and she also coached me on moving and changing positions.

Once I really got the hang of it, I changed into a pink poodle skirt outfit, the

one I wanted to feature on the front page of my website. Pink poodle skirts look great on stage and have that 50s girly look most people are going for when dressing up as a poodle girl. Kimbra encouraged me to move around as she shot different angles, sometimes moving in for close ups, and pulling back for far away shots. She made sure to ask me questions as she was snapping the photos, about how I'd like to use them so she could be guided and make sure to highlight what I wanted to include.

Also shooting was Kenneth Graham. He kept working on the lighting and technical things, perfecting the exposures and doing multiple test shots so Kimbra could focus all of her attention on getting the shots right with me. They worked so well together. It was interesting watching how they conferred and worked together, but also had different ways of approaching the shots. Through all of this, I had my assistant for the day Delia, eagerly helping me with wardrobe changes and makeup touch-ups.

Kimbra had suggested that I bring vintage hats to use as props with the vintage outfits and we brought those out to take closeup shots of my reactions to the hats. I think by this point we started to get a little silly from the lights and all the rustling around, and at one point, I kissed a hat! (I do love my hats!)

Overall impressions – nervous in beginning but felt confidence as we warmed up and I saw how good the pics were coming out (Kimbra showed me in the camera) Liked seeing myself with all the jewelry and had fun changing accessories. I enjoyed my day in the spotlight, and Kimbra was so wonderful to work with.

The Pillbox Hat is a unique and iconic 50s and 60s accessory with an interesting history. At the time it was looked at as a symbol of prim and proper high fashion, calling to mind the matchy ladylike fashion of Jacqueline Kennedy. One was crafted for her by Halston in bone white wool to wear at her husband's presidential inauguration. Even though she did not consider herself much of a hat wearer, she found the shape of this simple yet stylish hat so flattering that it became her signature hat for many years.

Why is the pillbox hat so flattering?

The Pillbox Hat shows classic style. Put one on and the simple shape will beautifully accentuate your features in a gentle yet remarkable way. Like other vintage hats, it can be pinned or placed at different angles on the head to get different effects from cutesy to dramatic and sensual. The best part is that it goes with just about anything, giving a glamorous, avant garde, preppy, whimsical, delicate, or even ironic look to your outfits depending on what you choose.

The pillbox hat actually originated from military styles stretching as far back as Roman times. At that time it was called the "pilleus" or "pannonian cap" and was worn by Roman soldiers.

Since the shape of a pillbox hat is so simple, embellishments can often be added for more of a party look without looking overdone. It can be fun to add a piece of netting to create a veil or just a touch of softness. Don't be afraid to experiment with vintage brooches or hat pins to get the look you want. Some people who are adept at this sort of thing may even add trim to the top ring or around the bottom of the hat, or sew on clusters of beads of gems. There are many types of bridal veils that even attach snoods to the pillbox, for a Celtic style.

Freckles and Get in Roanoke, Va. Vintage and Bubble tea!

After a fun morning shopping at Happy Flea Market in Roanoke Virgina I took a walk through the downtown market area near the
Taubman Museum and discovered Freckles, a fabulous vintage clothing store.

What is Freckles like? Here is a bit of info about this wonderful vintage store taken from their Facebook page:
“At Freckles, we love all things retro, handmade and unique. Whether you are looking for works by local artists, a fabulous 40's cocktail dress or some custom painted shoes, Freckles promises to deliver.”
What could be better than that?

In the front area of the store, there is also a charming place called Get where you can get coffee, tea, and…. Bubble tea! Vintage + bubble tea? Obviously a match made in heaven!
Walk towards the back of Get and you will find yourself passing through a magical doorway into Freckles. Freckles is stocked with vintage hats, shirts, dresses and an eclectic mix of collectibles.

While perusing the colorful clusters of clothing, I came upon my new favorite accessory--- a beautiful reversible cape with brick red on one side and a plaid pattern on the other.

The prices were very reasonable, and I couldn’t help myself but to snatch up this great vintage piece right away.

Here is the owner Stephanie. She was very friendly and excited to talk about the new store which opened up a few months ago.

Looking to throw a memorable party? How about a classy 50s cocktail theme!

Cocktail parties were a huge trend in the 40s and 50s, many women knew and studied the art of hosting a fine and fabulous cocktail party, and often tried to outdo each other with creative hors d'oeuvres and colorful jell-o molds.

In order to really get the mood and anticipation going you need to set the soundtrack! What kind of feel do you want to go for?
Find some retro bossa nova music to keep a light and mysterious-yet-festive mood, it will also not be too chaotic and make chit chat difficult. Or for a different kind of vibe, a Pat Boone album will surely set the record straight!

Healthy foods were definitely not the trend back then. When searching for recipes expect to see lots of mayonnaise and odd canned food concoctions creating unique flavor sensations. Strange Jello molds containing unique pickled ingredients created an alien and colorful presence at cocktail parties in suburban households throughout the USA.

A 50s party is just not complete without a jello mold... let your creativity fly! It's best if you can find a bundt cake pan or something similar to show off any submerged fruit or other floaty things that may be in your recipe. Many creative jello molds can also be found online. Keep searching at tag sales, or be creative when looking at cooking pans to find your jello mold soulmate, there's sure to be a mold for every personality out there! Novelty molds can also be found for special holidays.

This Website has a great style, and lots of easy to make authentic savory dips and festive fruit punches from the 50s. You might also be inspired by the great vintage pictures.

If you're worried about your waistline, stick to a tiki theme with kabobs topped with maraschino cherries and plates of pineapple rings. This Website has a range of ideas and recipes for a Tiki themed party.
Fondue parties were all the rage, but if you'd rather not eat mounds of cheese, a chocolate fondue with lush strawberries, melon, or star fruit can be just as fun and decadant.

Healthy appetizers with grilled fish like tuna or mahi mahi can also fit the 50s Tiki theme. Have plenty of mango salsa and guacamole on hand to serve with the fish for a burst of tropical flavor.

One fun yet cost effective iconic 50s hors d'oeuvres, are little pinwheel bread rolls. All you do is get some white wonder bread, cut off the crust, and roll it down with a rolling pin. Press firmly, but not too hard. Spread cream cheese, a touch of mustard, and develled ham onto the flattened bread. If you don't like develled ham, use tuna fish with finely chopped onions and a bit of mayonnaise + the cream cheese. Roll up the bread into a log shape. Cut the log like you are cutting sushi, into small 1/2" wide rounds.
Finally, spear each one from side to side with a tooth pick and either a green olive, or a pineapple chunk. Voila! You can also toast them a bit in the oven after they are all rolled up and toothpicked. Just set the oven to 350 degrees and pop in for about 5-10 minutes, maybe a bit more. Watch to make sure they do not burn.

Your pinwheels may end up looking something like the picture above. Click the picture for a less healthy, but probably more authentic version of the recipe.

Make sure bowls of snacks like cheese bread sticks are stuck around the house, so guests can mingle and graze and snack at their leisure. It also helps to keep your guests from getting too intoxicated!

It is also important that drink stations are easily accessable, and well stocked with garnishes, liquor, glasses, ice, and mixers. If you have more than 12 guests, it may be necessary to have a "bartender" to prepare drinks for everyone, to prevent chaos and ensure that everyone is having a good time rather than waiting in a long line at the drink station.

Cocktail attire is surely a must. Think beehives, blown out bobs, or updos tightly secured with no single hair out of place. A pearl choker and clip on button earrings seal the deal. For dresses, try a sleeveless sheath that hits about knee length, in black, white, or powder pastel colors. If it's chilly out, add a matching cardigan and a scarf secured with a circle pin or just simply tied in a knot. Keep shoes simple with rounded toe pumps in either flesh tones, black, or the same color as your dress. 50s style was often very matchy, a hostess's dress may even match the napkins at dinner! Also keep an eye out for tortoise shell accessories like hair clips, head bands, or glasses, as they were also very popular and classy at that time.

Not only that, but pins are versatile and can be worn or used in a variety of creative ways. Like how, you ask? I have researched the ways for you, as well as added some of my personal tips and tricks. Enjoy this list, I hope you find it helpful!

Pin a vintage brooch to a stretchy fabric headband, for a beautiful hair accessory that will also help keep your locks in place. This look can be casual, kitschy, classy, or very dressy depending on what brooches you use. To make more of an impact, use more pins. Choose a complimentary color of headband for the pins you are using. If in doubt--- black, or a color similar to your hair color will work almost every time.

Give a fresh look to your favorite hat, or a hat you never seem to feel like wearing by adding a vintage pin. You can also get more creative and pin things to the hat as well. Just pin the object on with your vintage brooch for a lovely ornate look. That's what hat-makers often do! Here are some ideas - a velvet or satin bow, a bunch of feathers, a piece of furry fabric, a fabric or felt shape, or a small piece of fringed fabric the same width as your pin. Just attach it on at the top and let the fringe hang down.

A jewelry pin can turn into a beautiful and unique pendant, just slide it onto a plain silver or gold chain. Some pins even have a loop in the back just for this purpose. You can also use a piece of satin cord, tie a knot and then place the pin back through the knot. This helps to hold the pin in place.

Get a piece of fabric and use a pin to create an easy and gorgeous fabric wrist band. Just use your vintage brooch to pin the two open ends together so that they either overlap in a slight "x", they bunch up gracefully, or meet in the middle. You can get more creative with this if you like by either choosing different kinds of fabrics --- try strands of sheer, silky or gauzy fabric, or ornate brocades. Velvet would make a great statement as well. You could also braid the fabric together, and then secure the ends with a brooch. If you don't want to deal with un-pinning the bracelet when you want to take it off-- just use a stretchy gym cuff, or make sure you use stretchy fabric.

Think creatively about where you place your jewelry pin. Try it on your shoulder or waist to draw attention to a detail or drape. Take a long thin fabric strip, tie, or cord, and adorn it with a brooch for a fanciful and girly belt. Or why not wear matching pins on your cuff instead of cuff links or even as an extra sparkly accent. Jewelry pins are not just for lapels :)

There's a world of collectible, fun pins out there. Use your imagination, experiment and create your own individual style. It's fun to jazz your wardrobe up with a unique vintage pin!

You might remember these two beautiful characters from your childhood fairy tales. Snow White was a quiet and shy girl who preferred to stay inside and read books, while Rose Red was cheerful and outgoing, and liked to play outside.

Rich Ruby Red for the Holidays

The holidays are coming. Time to bring out the good cheer and time to don your merry cozy sweater and red and white Santa hat.

Why are we so attracted to red in the winter and at the holidays? Red is a strong color, it can be deep and dark or shimmery bright and reflective. It's festive and perfect for party dresses and attracts attention like red lights blinking on a Christmas tree. And, of course, the color red pops! when paired with green like lustrous red holly berries nestled in prickly holly leaves.

Red is warm - think red flannel pajamas, crimson tights, cherry knee socks and a warm rosy cardigan. Santa drinking warm cocoa on a cold night is dressed head to toe in red with cozy white trim.

Red is delicious too. Drink deep the red red wine, crunch a ruby red apple and delve into the mystery of the sweet and tart pomegranate. Spice your life with hot red pepper, sweet strawberries and cherries.

This time of year, I dream of dressing in a red circle skirt and green cardigan with cute boots but won’t I look too much like an elf? It may possible to overdo the red and green motif but red is everywhere keeping us warm and bright this winter.

How to keep warm and stay fashionable on a blustery day? A vintage scarf could be the answer for you!

Vintage scarves are great things to have. Why?
- They can be folded up small, so they won't take up lots of space.
- They feel luxurious.
- They can bring an outfit together with a nice bit of color for a signature look.
- They are collectible and each one is unique.

Wear them in many different ways: as a head wrap, sash, pony tail tie, or bandanna. Larger scarves can even be worn as sarongs or halter tops in warm weather.

For great vintage scarves, you have to look no further than The Vintage Scarf.

Go green with vintage clothing! Why is vintage green?

Even though it now appears that donating clothing to charities may not be the charitable action we once thought (clothing often ends up in third world countries in over abundance, causing economical,societal, and environmental problems), wearing vintage clothing and using old clothing can still make an impact on the environment, and your community.

How can you use vintage clothing and your old clothes to make a difference? And why is buying vintage clothing better than getting new clothes from chain stores?

1. Vintage clothing is often made better, and (obviously) can stand the test of time. Getting ahold of a few good vintage items, and repairing them as needed will last you a lot longer than current cheaply made and often questionably produced garments.

2. Clothing swaps in your area can also be found by simply searching online. They can be great ways to meet people, have a good time, and give, while possibly finding something great for yourself! Clothing swap parties are a great way to have fun and spread a mentality of "making things stretch" in your community. At the party, you can put out educational material on "green living." Turn it into a healthy potluck - people can bring their unwanted clothing and a healthy dish. Encourage people to bring food with a locally produced or organic element if possible. If an entire community is aware about green living, making the transition can be much easier, as people can share their tips amongst each other. Banding together and harnessing your “buying power will eventually lower the cost of organic items, and make your community more green.

3. Stained, torn, or faded vintage clothing can become a canvas for your creative side. Crafting and selling independently are great ways to "be green." When you are an independent seller, not only do you have the option to connect to your community on a personal basis, but you also cut down in a small but powerful way against gas guzzling corporations and less than savory factory conditions. Old vintage clothing can be revamped in many ways - the garments are either embellished, re sewn, patched, braided, or screen printed to become one of a kind new pieces. The garments can also be deconstructed to create functional items like pot holders, dishcloths, baby slings and diaper bags, purses, quilts, curtains, and more. Cut strips of fabric and braid them together. Embellish the braid with vintage buttons, or just leave it plain. Tye the ends off with some cord, or a thinner strip of fabric, or you can sew it shut. You can use this section of braided fabric as a retro headband, or necklace.

Overall, vintage clothing can be a great way to help make things stretch. While donating clothing may not be as green as we once thought - clothing ends up getting trucked around, and may end up in Africa, where resellers that take advantage hurt the economy - doing some research into what non profit you are donating to, and what the pathway is of the donated clothing, can help you feel good about your donation. Using vintage clothing, and learning to be thrifty and think outside of the box can get you started on making other green changes in your life, and connecting with your community.

I met Elvis at Liedy's South Shore Inn on Staten Island last night...... Glittering jumpsuit, Las Vegas "the concert years" Elvis. Singing his heart out, showing the love Elvis..... Gregg Peters as Elvis. He looks and sounds like Elvis and for one enchanted evening I was carried away by the sound of his voice and "Love me Tender"

Mr Peters has been performing as Elvis for over 32 years, over 10,000 performances by his calculation. It's a family affair with son JJ Burton on guitar and mom singing duets as "Miss Marie". Mr Peters is from Astoria Queens, has studied music and voice and has always been drawn to Elvis. “I fell in love with Elvis’ music. I loved all of his films,” he said. “The way he looked, his style.” Elvis is a natural at Liedy's, a popular, local Staten Island bar that is know for its funky music scene. The packed audience enthusiastically applauded the hits, sang along and cheered for Elvis. Mr Peters/Elvis worked the room, grasped hands, hugged and even let me kiss him on the cheek.

Elvis with Larry Liedy, owner of the Shore Inn. Mr Liedy is a popular singer and often appears on stage at the Shore Inn.

In the spirit of Elvis, who was known for his generosity, Mr Peters includes a fundraiser for a local charity in all his shows. These include support for the Red Cross and St Judes Foundation among others.

We had a wonderful time singing along and dancing. Thanks to all the lovely people at Liedy's and thanks to Mr Peters who shares the love of Elvis where ever he goes.

Beach Party movies were popular in the 50s and 60s and were famous for their kitschy humor, summery fun music, and air of teenage rebellion. Most of the actors played independent, fun loving teenagers, even though they were really in their 20s. They were free to do whatever they want and live on their own terms in summer houses along the beach.

If you've never seen a beach party movie, try checking out "Gidget" or the 1963 hit "Beach Party" (said to have started the trend).

Beach Party movies inspired a fashion trend - Tiki Prints, Pendleton shirts, halter tops, white, tight, somewhat short Levis, sandles, and a light sprinkling of humor and mod fashion created the 50s surfer look.

Vintage blouses, each one is unique.

From sweet and simple, to metallic and feathery, each vintage blouse is unique, beautiful and (sometimes strange).

After coming across a great "new" batch of vintage and coming across a great 1940s hand embroidered blouse, I decided it was finally time to create a Treasury in Etsy's new Treasury East feature.

I have to say, in the past I never even looked at the Treasury page because it seemed so strange to wait, and try and try again to make one of these things. Etsy has now revamped the treasury page to make it open to everyone. ...Finally!

I decided to take a stab.
My first Treasury is dedicated to some of the most unique vintage blouses Etsy has to offer (in my humble opinion, of course). It has a fluffy hand crocheted turquoise fringe blouse, a blouse with an embroidered scene of a sunny idyllic road, my 1940s Moroccan style beatnik top, an amazing 80s Psychedelic Gucci top, and much more.

I was inspired by my love for Japanese Fruits fashion, and the idea "What would two "Fruits" fashion girls wear on a nostalgic road trip?"

Have you ever heard of Squidoo?

Squidoo may have a funny name, but it's usefulness as a promoting and social tool is nothing to laugh about.

Upon entering the Squidoo.com website, you may feel overwhelmed by links and information. Give yourself a moment, breathe, and listen: Do you know something about something? Do you like something? According to Squidoo, that's all you need to be a part of the community, write your own lens, and benefit from this fantastic site. You do not have to be an expert, you just have to be interested!

Squidoo is mostly made up of things called "lenses." I don't know about you, but to me, hearing the word "Lens" makes me think of magic, kaleidoscopes, portals to another dimension, and hippie glasses. In reality, a lens is basically this:
a blog
a youtube page
a chat room
a social media hub
a way to earn money for yourself or charity
and a community.

Lens pages are set up in such a way, that they can be easily shared to all of the top social media sites. On the toolbar at the bottom of your page, are handy links to various chat platforms that open up in a Facebook type fashion, discrete and out of the way. Potentially these can be used to hold conferences, debates, answer questions, and add to the effect of your lens, if you so desire. There is a button to "like" the lens, and even an option to see other lenses of a related subject. Lenses are graded by a star rating system, and how many people "like" and visit it.

So getting traffic to your lens, and putting good and relevant information out there, can literally benefit you.

Tips to create a good lens:
- Try not to make it a purely promotional tool. Lenses that are only telling you what to buy are boring!
- Make an eye catching lens image
- Write about things you like and care about.
- Be friendly, engaging, and don't hide your unique voice
- Just do it - once you've squidooed you'll be hooked !

Walk in the City - Tokyo Streetwear for Rainy April Days by Hey Viv! by heyviv featuring Christopher Kane tops

I've been seeing these pretty collage things everywhere! What are they? How are people popping them out so fast, and so beautifully? One day, I stumbled upon the origin --and it is magnificent : Polyvore.com !

Polyvore is not only a fun way to share your personal style and taste, but it is actually great for promotion, and for showing how your items can be incorporated into a whole style image. Polyvore sets can be created for fashion, interior design, or even just conceptual artistic images. The best part is---- each picture links back to the original page where it was "clipped from" (with the easy to install Polyvore toolbar thing). So if someone likes your soy candle, or bracelet, or silk screened t shirt, (etc), they can go directly to the page and buy the item. Hovering and clicking on the item in the "set" will show a description, price, title, and a link to related items.

Items can be added to the site once you install the "Clip to Polyvore" tool. I had a little trouble finding it at first, so I thought I'd give you the link. It can be found here: Polyvore Clipper Tutorial Page
On the page are instructions.... basically *all* you do is drag the link onto your toolbar. The end! :)

As you are browsing through websites, once you see an item you would like to add to your set, just click the "Clip to Polyvore" tool on your toolbar, and then click on the item you want to upload. A box will pop up allowing you to title the item whatever you wish, and add in seemingly unlimited tags for the item.

Unfortunately some sites have blocked Polyvore from working. So items can not be uploaded directly from Etsy. :( I hate that because I really think it could be a great promotion tool for us Etsians!

The Boy with Green Hair is possibly the first of it's kind of idealism to emerge in mass culture. Made in 1946 by Dore Sharey, this little known movie featured the song "Nature Boy" and was later referenced in Moulin Rouge in 2001. The Boy, played by Dean Stockwell (of Quantum Leap fame). Featuring some amazing Irish actors as well, this is a great film to watch with your family this St. Patrick's day!

Sharing Memories of the 1950's on Staten Island at the Conference House

This week I visited the Conference House in Staten Island. It's a grand stone manor named in memory of the 1776 conference convened at the House in an attempt to end the Revolutionary War. The House is on the south shore of Staten Island and has a beautiful view overlooking Raritan Bay.

Now, I'm a 1950's gal at heart and 1776 is a bit early for me so - why the time travel ? Susan Fowler from the museum recently contacted me about a special show called "Coming to Staten Island - 1950's Memories." She thought I might be able to help out with some tidbits from that time. I have been collecting boxes and merchandise from the old time 50's stores like Garbers, Paul's Men's Shop and Marino's Department Store since my retail years on Port Richmond Ave. (Yes, I remember when Woolworth's was still there.) I packed up a box of items to lend and during my visit to the newly opened exhibit, I met with Kirsten Teasdale, the Museum Educator and Susan Fowler for a tour of the show and the Conference House.

Vintage buttons, learn all about them, and how to sew them on.

Buttons- the seemingly miscellaneous category of vintage...

One day, I was listing some vintage buttons in my new Etsy store calledHey Viv ! Discovered, when I realized, I actually don't know what to call these things! There is actually tons of information on buttons.... there is in fact, an entire vintage button culture that is quite fascinating and not to be overlooked.

If you collect vintage clothing, or like to repair and create your own clothes, you very well might have a jar of buttons of all types, somewhere in your home. Buttons are not only an essential item to have a stock of if you buy or sell vintage clothing, they can be highly collectible, and great for arts and crafts as well!

I thought I would share some of my research with you:

Amazing Button Dictionary
This is a great resource with tons of information to help in identifying vintage buttons. It will also help you find the right keywords. I have it bookmarked! :)

This vintage button article, written by Sarah Mandel, says to consider how the item will be cleaned before choose your sewing method. Some people like to show off their vintage buttons on decorations, crafts, or art. These items will probably not need to be washed often (or ever), so you can sew the button on more securely.

On clothing, you may want to remove the buttons before cleaning if they are particularly special or delicate. Certain kinds of buttons (like leather,celluloid, and synthetic or real pearl) can be damaged when exposed to the chemical processes of dry cleaning.

Maintaining and repairing vintage clothing is not as hard as it seems! All you need to know are a few basic stitches, and have a few everyday supplies at the ready.
There are of course, more advanced techniques and processes, but it's important to know the basics first, before moving forward.

Here are the essentials:
- Small cuticle scissors (preferably with a curved tip)
- Sharp fabric scissors - these will make clean cuts, and help to keep certain fabrics from fraying on the ends.
- Needles of various sizes
- Thin thread to match the stitches in your garment

You may need:
- Push pins (to help hold fabric in place while you sew)
- A thimble (If you're like me, you stick yourself constantly! hehe)
- Waxed Floss - This is my personal sewing trick. When you have to sew a very tough seam that keeps splitting, or when you're sewing thick fabric (like jeans), waxed floss is amazing! It will never split or loosen. You will be able to see the stitches quite a bit, so this only works for areas that aren't visible, or if you like the look of very noticeable stitches.
------ It also works great for sewing patches over holes, decorative patches and appliqués, buttons, stuffed animals and crafts, and sewing fur additions onto clothing.

There are three basic stitches that you must know:
The Back Stitch
The Running Stitch
The Invisible Slip Stitch

Red and green-- beautiful colors of the holidays that bring to mind warm fireplaces in log cabins, the scent of pine needles and hot chocolate, and plump red holly berries.

These colors surround us at this time of year, but did you ever wonder why?

Apparently, Green is a representation of eternal life -- the evergreen tree survives the harsh cold winter and comes out strong. Christian belief takes this analogy and compares it to the eternal life of Jesus Christ, with red being the blood shed from the crucifixion.

Traditionally on December 24, the church presented The Paradise Play, the story of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden. Here's a vintage recipe I'd like to share with you, found on The Retro Housewife

Source: December 29, 1977 - Las Cruces Sun-News, Las Cruces, New Mexico
Ingredients

* 1 quart cranberry juice cocktail
* 1 can (6 ounces) frozen concentrated lemonade
* 1 cup grape juice
* 1½ cups water
* 2 cinnamon sticks
* 10 whole cloves
* Lemon slices

Preparation Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, lower heat and simmer 10 minutes. Remove spices and serve at once garnished with lemon slices.

For an alcoholic version stir in 1 cup whiskey after spices are removed. This amount serves 10.

The keynote presenter was Sue Urda, co-founder of Powerful You! Women’s Network. Many great speakers were there to share their advice and tried and true techniques, as well as new advancements in modern small business marketing. Vivian Vassar was there to share advice, along with Julie Laudicina, Rose Duffy ( RoseInteriors.com) and
Susan Fowler ( Fast-Consulting.com )

It was a beautiful day, with an undeniable end of summer chill. Vivian Vassar and I entered the Sheraton Hotel dressed in 40s and 50s vintage attire, with pens and notepads in hand. Viv unveiled one of her most beautiful hats for the meeting-- a vibrant pheasant feathered cap in autumn colors. After enjoying a hearty breakfast and joining in the pledge of allegiance, I made my way to the conference room where Vivian and fellow SI Internet Group members were sharing their vital online marketing knowledge.

Rose Duffy was the first speaker. She talked about how writing articles online has helped her interior design business, and improved the visibility of her website. All around the room you could hear “Ohh!” and “I never thought of that!”. Because of the articles she has written, her name is one of the first that show up during Google searches for window treatments. Writing online articles not only is a great way to improve your visibility, but it also allows you to share the knowledge of your special service or craft with others (you‘ll be surprised how much they will appreciate it!). Hearing about what she has learned and how much it has improved her business was very inspiring and helpful to me, as well as everyone else in the room.

Susan Fowler sharing her web 2.0 marketing and security knowledge

Susan Fowler of Fast-Consulting spoke about how to run your business online in a safe and secure way. She taught us what websites to stay away from, and what precautions to take if you run your online business from home. One great bit of advice she had to share was that Facebook apps can also carry viruses. Now that marketing on Facebook has become important, I thought this was a very useful thing to know, and be wary of.

Vivian Vassar had many great things to say about the Internet Group she is a part of, and how far they have come as a whole. In the beginning, many of them were struggling with the various social networking sites, and the different style of marketing that is currently advantageous. For many of them, it was hard to understand that having a Myspace, Twitter, or Facebook account could greatly help their businesses, especially knowing that these are sites their kids often drown much of their time on, for entertainment. Together, and with the help of many of the great speakers that have come to their monthly meetings, they have learned to implement these sites in their daily networking and advertising tasks. Sometimes juggling all of these things can be quite mind-boggling and time consuming, so Vivian suggested that we keep a spreadsheet of the social networking sites we are located on, and figure out how many times a week each one needs to be visited. Check off the sites that you visit each week, and only visit/post to each one the number of times you have specified on the spreadsheet. This will keep you from getting distracted and spending too much time on each one, and also remind you of where you are on the web, so you won’t forget to maintain any of them. 21st Century Business Women!

Our day at the 21st century business woman conference came to a close in a beautiful dining hall overlooking a Japanese garden. We sat in front of floor to ceiling waterfalls that glistened and enchanted us with the sounds of bubbling and splashing water. Keynote speaker Sue Urda gave us her message of positive thinking, and how it not only improves our business, but our lives as a whole. She urged us to “trust your gut” in ventures, that doing so not only often leads to a correct decision, it also leads you to not regret your decision afterwards. All of us received a copy of her book “Powerful Intentions ~ Everyday Gratitude: 100 Transformational Days to Create a Life of Joy, Grace and Ease” and an inspirational stone. The lavender book and crisp white setting seemed to me the perfect colors for the 21st century business woman: organized, feminine, yet powerful in a truly unique way.

Defining vintage clothing - what characteristics draw your eye?

There are many clear and concise ways to determine if an item is vintage, but also many blurred lines and rules. It may be easy for a teenager now to consider early 90s clothing vintage, and absurd to even call it "retro" to others. Many of us remember the first time we came across our childhood toys in a vintage or antique shop, and how strange it felt.

"Definition: The term vintage is used to describe clothing, either used or new from dead stock, which was manufactured in a non-contemporary era. Clothing made before the 1920s are considered antique, while clothing made in the 80s to mid-90s are considered retro.

Vintage may also be used as an adjective to describe an item which is from another era (i.e.: "My shirt is vintage")."

While what is considered antique, vintage, or retro can be argued, there *are* clear ways to date styles, and specific things to look for to tell what era an item is from. To collect and sell vintage accurately, you have to be a bit of a scientist, historian, and psychic (haha :P).

A great way to know the age of a dress is to look at the zipper-- dresses near the 1950s almost always have metal zippers. From the 70s on, it was more common to find nylon zippers.

Coordinating your various online shops! A task indeed, but not as hard as you think.

For some of us, having just one online store is enough to display everything, but for those who sell different types of things, or who are just experimenting, having multiple online stores is a necessity. How can the stores be coordinated, so that traffic flows as equally as possible throughout?

As some of you may know, I specialize in vintage clothing, vintage hats, and also 50s costume items like poodle skirts and wigs. I sell my items in four locations online:
Hey Viv 50s Poodle Skirts
Hey Viv at Etsy
Bonanzle
Amazon

Here is why I have four different online stores, instead of combining everything on my one main store.
* Different sites work for different people
* Different people are interested in different styles of things.
* Experimenting with different websites helps you find your specific buyers, and possibly new formats that might work better for you.
* Some websites may not allow your items.
* The more sites you have with your name attached, the more someone is likely to come across it, and maybe recognize you!

So, how can these be coordinated? The first thing to do, is make sure your sites link to one another. This can get tricky especially with sites like Etsy where it may hurt your reputation or seem rude to link to another site that sells non hand made items. Use your judgement in these situations, or kindly ask the advice of people in the forums. If you sell cup cakes, it may be too much of a stretch to link to your vintage car part site.

BUT! If your cup cake website has a vintage diner theme, or something similar, it would be more feasible to link to the vintage car part site, since those images often go hand and hand. There are ways to bridge the gap between seemingly non-related items. Bridging the gap between stores visually not only allows you to feasibly link to your other stores, but it also makes you more recognizable to your buyers, giving a sort of "look" with the name.

Make sure with each item you ship out, you include a paper that has links to your other stores, and possibly short descriptions of each. Another option is to include a coupon with the order that can be used in your multiple stores.

Lastly, updates of your store listings in a blog will help greatly. If you would rather have separate blogs for each store, just make sure you add links or widgets for the other stores on each one!

You will be a pro coordinator in no time! :)

Sweater Clips, the Underestimated Accessory

Searching through your local vintage shop, or perhaps perusing online, you come across a pretty piece of jewelry that at first, appears to be some sort of necklace, or earring set. Upon closer inspection, you see that it is two pin-like ornate buttons, attached by a short chain. What on earth could this be for? Why it’s a sweater clip, of course!

Vintage sweater clips (or “sweater chains” OR “sweater guards” ) are one of the most underestimated accessories. Originally they were meant as an accessory for draping your sweater over your shoulders. The clip fastened onto the sweater
, preventing it from falling off, and providing a more elegant look (rather than knotting the arms)

Even if you aren’t a retro fashion enthusiast, you can still fit this extremely versatile object into your daily wardrobe.

Here is a sweater clip being worn as an interesting pin.

To mix it up, try wearing many at once in complimentary colors or designs.

Sweater guards look great when paired with other vintage pins. Especially on a hat! :]

This can also work with a pretty head wrap, or a fascinator.

Snap onto your shoe, for a funky, fantastical, or bohemian look.

If you don’t want the sweater chain bouncing around when you walk, wear it clipped onto tall boots, or you can even twist it into your shoelaces.

Vintage Scarves from Head Wraps to Cowl Necks- plus some thrift store searching help!

Scarves come in many different shapes and sizes. This one is loop-shaped, for an easy headband, or cowl neck scarf.

Using vintage scarves to update your look can make a big difference, and cost very little. Even if you are the type of person that feels silly wearing a scarf when it isn't chilly out, you can still try out one of the many other ways of wearing one. All you need is a little creativity.

Think of scarves as a type of canvas, which you can alter, or fold any way you want, with little commitment money-wise. Scarves have a wide range of prices, but beautiful and at times hilariously unique scarves can often be found at your local thrift store for as low as a few cents.

When buying a scarf at a thrift store, don't be afraid to dig through the barrels to the bottom. Maybe someone else didn't have as much fortitude as you, and the best scarf ever is right on the bottom! ....Haha, maybe not, but it's worth it to search thoroughly, you might find a real gem. For signs of quality, look for things like hand rolled hems, designer labels, silk, and possibly hand painted or hand embroidered scarves.

So, now that you have collected your scarf treasures, what can you do with them?

For starters:
This site has a very basic and up to date scarf tying guide, with step by step instructions and little pictures.
I'm a big fan of the Neck Wrap, which sort of mimics a cowl neck shirt, and stays in place, not morphing into a mess every time the wind blows a bit.

Here are some suggestions to get you started:

1. The Rose Knot can be very elegant, or very quirky, depending on the scarf you choose, and your hairstyle. Rhinestone pins, or small hat pins can be pinned onto the scarf to add some kitschy glamour.

2. Tye it into a halter top (many video tutorials can be found online), and pair it with a flowy skirt, or pair of pants.

3. Sew multiple scarves together to make a rectangle a bit larger than the circumference of your waist, or bigger if you like. Take a strip of fabric and sew it along the top of the skirt, leaving five inches or more hanging off the sides. Cut a small slit about 12" in on the top of the skirt, so that when you wrap the skirt around yourself, you can pull one of the ties through the hole. Finish by tying the knot of your choice, and there you have it. A simple skirt. Here's an illustration of what I am describing, with the ties: Click. this picture shows only one tye hanging off of the side. You would want to still use two, it's a lot easier.

4. Always keep a thin scarf in your purse, you never know when it might come in handy for emergency cover ups. (sudden bad hair day, rain, a spontaneous trip to a chilly beach, etc.).

5. Use it to create a draw-string type purse, or to line the inside of your bag.

6. If all else fails, you can always cut the design out of the scarf, and sew it onto things, like a patch. If there is no obvious design, make your own cut-out. It doesn't have to be sewn perfectly. I like sewing patches on with waxed floss to get really noticeable stitches, that never ever come out.

Not all scarves are square! Here are some other styles:

Scarves that already have ties are less likely to slip out of your hair.

Sheer scarves may look plain on first sight, but once tied on, they have an ethereal and glowy look.

In the war era of the late 1940s, most women wore bland colors, usually in the form of a pencil skirt with a lighter blouse.
Times were hard, food and goods were rationed, 'Make do and mend' was one of the taglines of the 1940s -- so you can imagine people were not in the mood for tons of fun and fashion expirementation. When the war came to a close in 1945, the boys came home, and rock & roll emerged. Young girls started looking for more active, exciting and stylish options (that were still pleasing to their parents), while women started wearing more comfortable outfits that were functional both in and out of the home.

1950s blouses were simple and feminine, with a dash of rock & roll and a touch of diner nostalgia. Most blouses were conservative but stylish, often in white, pink, or black. Some daring outfits like tight pants with heels and short jackets were not looked highly upon, but generally accepted. 50s style for women is exemplified by the idea that after the tough 40s, women wanted to feel better about themselves, look more feminine, and show that they could have fun. (that's where the infatuation with poodles and such things came into play)

Types of 50s blouses include the peter pan blouse, peasant/gypsy top, and sheer nylon blouse. All of these were seen in both daywear and evening form.

Let's go to the hop! What is a chalypso? Hey Viv! Informs

What on earth is a chalypso? Apparently people in the 50's were confused as well. In 1957 something happened called "The Calypso Craze of 1957." Although the dance was not instantly attractive to American teenagers of that time, it did eventually catch on later, after the Craze was over in 1958. (I guess after the adults were done with it, it was available to become "cool" ;P). The chalypso was a short lived sensational dance that became popular during this time. Like a a baby explosion inside of a big mama explosion. It was developed by the dancers on the popular show, American Bandstand.

Here is a simple math equation:

Cha Cha Cha + Calypso = CHALYPSO :)

BUT....

The CHALYPSO <= THE TWIST

The Chalypso was short lived, as a new dance called The Twist enticed the nation. Thankfully the song was immortalized in the very song I have quoted above called "At the Hop" by Danny and the Junior's.

A little while ago, I received a very sweet message from Jessica Schroeder, the writer of the colorful fashion blog What I Wore asking if she could feature one of my favorite dresses I had featured on my Etsy store. I sent the dress out and was promptly contacted within a few days that the blog/fashion shoot was already up! (I don't know if you can tell, but I am really excited, haha :] )
Here it is!

What I Wore: Technicolor

Can you believe this dress if from the late 50s/early 60s? The colors are so amazing and bright— I am totally smitten. This is sort of the sassy housewife look, more maybe even the single gal? Running around town, forcing attention to her technicolor brights. It felt really good wearing this dress. Its a new favorite. I could even do the green rainboots if I needed to!! Instead I opted from caramel brown accessories and some wacky bracelets that I never thought I’d wear again. Lucky me!

The dress is from Hey Viv! Vintage. She has repro 50s style clothing (think poodle skirts and crinolines!)+ vintage and an etsy store with only super awesome vintage and really really great prices. Definitely a place I’ll be haunting. Let her know Jessica sent you!!

I'm sorting through vintage purses today, checking condition. I started to think about all the items I've found in vintage bags that were left by previous owners. The usual things I find in purses are matchbooks, nail files, ticket stubs, Tums, hankies, rain bonnets and bobby pins. The unusual finds have included false teeth, part of a faucet (must have been one heck of a party ! ) a ripped up dollar bill and a set of false nails. Each purse is a potential surprise - will it be empty ? or will it contain a bit of treasure tucked away?

Ok, so I have to ask.... What's the weirdest thing you've ever found in a purse that you purchased ?

I have specialized in plus size vintage for many years, and although I have picked up a lot of knowlage over the years, I would love to hear some of your ideas.

I've updated my Etsy store, and I have to say that I am much happier with the photographs now! Shooting with a higher resolution makes all the difference, and add to that some new photoshop techniques with color replacement in the background.... aah so much better :)

I love hats! This is a great one I'm selling in my Hey Viv! store. It actually has a print of cactuses on it. Amazing. I have always been infatuated with hats from a very young age, perhaps the earliest display of my hat love was when my mom let me pick out whatever I wanted from a well known store at the time ( Anyone remember " Robert Hall ? " haha ). My choice? A long tan coat and matching hat. I thought it was the coolest concept in the world.

Sometimes people feel cautious about buying vintage hats because they sometimes need a little upkeep, or extra care. Flowers get smooshed or the hat becomes misshapen from storage. But it's realy easy! Here is an article I wrote on basic vintage hat care.

Plunging into the World of Etsy

There it is! My old store Hey Viv! I was in business at this location in Staten Island, New York for fourteen years, when I decided to "go online" to have more time with my family at home. Closing the store was hard because I had so much fun running it. I have long tried to support the local art scene and would often have local artwork from Staten Islanders hanging in the windows along side glamorous vintage party dresses, unique aprons, and authentic Hawaiian shirts . I have found that the best businesses are personal, colorful, and unique, rather than faceless corporations.

Changing from being a brick and morter store, to an online business isn't - believe it or not - any less concrete [ don't mind the pun ] . I spend most of my time working on the store, taking and uploading pictures and hunting for the best vintage clothing I can find (when I am not doing that, I am trying to figure out how to organize what seems like infinite boxes of vintage in a real-life version of Tetris).

Because I value personal customer care, and independant business so much, I have recently plunged into the world of Etsy. This time, I tried to focus on displaying the clothing with more of an element of fantasy. Etsy is great for selling and buying vintage clothes, because the format allows you to easily show a lot of detail about each outfit, almost celebrating each one. The more detail you can cleanly provide, the more likely the customer will be happy in the end, because the product is exactly what they expected.

Another great thing about Etsy, is it's wonderful community of talented artists and collectors. Everyone works together in a way-- any time I have have a question about how to make my shop better, or how to fix a problem, I just consult one of the many forums and someone is right there, happy to help out. Thanks Etsy people!

So to close this, I'd like to post a picture of one of my favorite dresses at the moment:

Right People at the Right Time - 25 Years of Selling Vintage Clothing

25 years selling vintage clothing! How did this happen? Wasn’t I just in college diving into barrels of “clothing by the pound” looking for padded shoulders and Hawaiian rayon shirts? I can still hear myself trying to convince a bystander “It’s not junk – it’s collectible!”

And now, I’ve seen, worn and sold hundreds of shirtwaist dresses and circle skirts and I get to play dress up as part of my job. It’s a good time to thank all of the vintage collectors and kind souls that I met along the way. They helped me develop skills and know-how that I needed to get through 25 years of selling vintage clothing at Hey Viv !

Here’s my “right people right time” list:

My Dad – Going to thrift stores with my dad while I was growing up made me groan and want to hide. Everyone knew him in the benefit shops and they often had a prized piece of clothing hidden behind the counter waiting just for him. He used to say things to me like “Look at that inside seam” and “They don’t make it this way anymore.” And “check the label it’s Harrington Tweed! “ My response was a lot of teenage eye rolling. Well, thanks to Dad I can now look at clothing inside and out and appreciate the details.

Dan – who helped me design my logo and set up my first marketing campaigns after listening to my tale of woe and complaints about a lack of customers. He told me that I had to “stop selling used clothing and start selling the vintage experience.”

Carol – a loyal friend who hung, steamed and folded mountains of vintage clothing that had been stored for years in bags. In 1986, I bought lots of stock and dithered about opening my store until she pointed out that no one else she knew had 76 black dresses so I’d better open my store. Thanks for the push Carol !

Barbara – a kind soul who sold her vintage collection to me when I was just starting out. That haul later became the basis for my business. Barbara remarked that she remembered what it felt like to open a business and she liked that her vintage clothing was helping someone else get a good start.

And there’s the untold number of customers who walked through my door and who generously shared their knowledge of vintage, helping me to learn dating, fabric and style. Online sellers and vintage forums are my support system now. When I need help with a technical question or encouragement to expand my business the right people are in chat rooms, blogs, and boards, sharing tips and funny stories. Thanks to everyone I’ve met along the way - I’m out of the “clothing by the pound” barrel and online to sell the best stuff !
